Vodafone has announced it will shut down its email service, saying it can no longer provide the experience its customers need.

The tech giant has cited rising technological issues as the reason for the shutdown, saying: "We tried very hard to fix this for our customers with little success due to the age of the platform. That's simply not good enough for us here at Vodafone, so we've made the decision to close the service down."

Vodafone admits that a number of its customers are no longer using the email service, and it's working with Google and Microsoft to ensure that nobody is left behind in the changeover.

The Vodafone email service has been in use since the 1990s but has recently suffered from problems with "huge amounts of spam and delays in receiving emails".

The Telecommunication Users Association of New Zealand (TUANZ) said many customers may not have the technological knowledge to set up a new email inbox.

"A big number of those 200,000 customers that will be impacted will be of a generation that aren't necessarily technically savvy, so it's going to be tricky for them to go into settings on their computer to sort out forwarding themselves," CEO Craig Young told Newshub.

The service will shut down on Thursday, November 30, 2017.
