The brother of a teen killed while fleeing police in a stolen car has skipped bail he was granted to attend the funeral.
The Department of Corrections, which runs prisons, says a remand prisoner who was granted bail by a court to attend a funeral failed to return to Mt Eden Corrections Facility on Friday.
He was not in the custody of Corrections staff while bailed.
When he failed to return at the stipulated time, staff at the prison notified police.
The New Zealand Herald reports he's the brother of Morrocco Mal Tai, 15, who died on Monday after he crashed a stolen car in Otara in the early hours of the morning. Tai had fled police.
On September 22, he was in a stolen car which was travelling at speeds of up 120km/h in the wrong direction on Auckland's Southern Motorway.
The fatal crash that took his life has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority and police are also conducting their own investigation.
