Police have named a man who died in a jet boat accident at the World Championship Jet Boat Marathon in Canterbury on Sunday.

He was Duayne Barry Insley of Glenorchy, aged 47.

The accident happened on the Waimakariri River at around 10:50am, during the upstream leg of the event. No one else was injured in the incident, police say.

"A Maritime New Zealand spokesman says police are investigating on behalf of the coroner, and will provide assistance in any way they can," The New Zealand Jet Boat River Racing Association said in a Facebook post.

The week-long championship began on Saturday, with competitions being held across eight rivers around the South Island.

Police say next-of-kin are being advised and their thoughts are with Mr Insley's friends and family.
