A Hamilton high school has got the ball rolling with end-of-year pranks, turning the principal's office into a chicken farm.

"Last day with our Seniors today, we already suspect some fowl play!" St Johns College wrote on Facebook, alongside a photo of their principal's six new office mates.

It's a country-wide tradition for year 13 students to pull pranks on their final day of term. Uniform swapping, tying people to poles with cling-wrap and water fights are all classic gags.

But some schools' end-of-year pranks aren't always as responsible as St Johns'.

Other schools have experienced arson, cars doing burnouts through school grounds and graffiti on buildings in previous years.

It's put some school staff on high-alert. Last year Epsom Girls Grammar School was one of many to ban pranks, telling Fairfax they had "gone too far" with huge messes left for caretakers.

But St Johns College appears confident their students will embrace the spirit of the day, adding on Facebook it's "going to be a full day of yokes".

The school declined to comment to Newshub.

High schools don't all celebrate their last day on Tuesday - so there will likely be plenty more pranks pulled in the coming weeks.
