A fire in Hastings, from which two children were rescued, has been deemed "suspicious" by police.

Fire investigators say they are still examining the scene, trying to determine the cause of the serious fire, which occurred in Saint Leonards on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were initially called to the blaze in a derelict building on Heretaunga Street West at 2:30pm. Two children were rescued and taken to hospital with serious burns.

One remains in a critical condition in intensive care and the second child is now in a stable condition.

Police say five adults were taken to hospital as a result of smoke inhalation, but they have all been discharged.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed "unusual activity" near the property before the fire.
