A McDonald's drive-thru worker in Auckland has been offered counselling after an angry customer threatened to shoot him if he didn't get free food.

The man drove up to the window at a McDonald's in Mt Roskill at about 2:45am on September 30.

He demanded free food, and ordered staff to make it appear on their system as though he had paid for it.

When staff refused, the enraged customer allegedly threatened to shoot.

"The offender then began reaching into the rear of the vehicle, which caused the two workers to fear for their safety," says Constable Don Allan.

The McDonald's staff quickly gave the offender several bags of food, before he sped away.

The alleged offender was driving a Nissan Primera, registration number AGF960.

McDonald's spokesperson Simon Kenny says support has been offered to the affected staff.

"We can confirm there was an incident at McDonald's Stoddard Road, where a customer threatened a staff member in drive-thru," he says.

"The police were notified and we are assisting them with their investigation. Staff are trained to manage potentially dangerous situations and the person involved has been offered support, including counselling."
