Nelson is set to feel the brunt of heavy rain blowing in from the Tasman Sea with the MetService issuing a severe weather warning for the region.
Up to 200mm rain is expected to accumulate in the area in the 40 hours leading into early Monday morning with the heaviest falls to hit the ranges of Nelson west of Motueka.
With thunderstorms possible on Sunday, the rains could cause surface flooding and slips in the region, MetService warns.
The low pressure system is also set to bring weekend wet weather to much of the North Island.
Hitting the surrounds of Mt Taranaki first from about 7pm on Saturday, MetService forecasts the rain to then soak Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Tongariro National Park in a more than 25 hour burst from about 4am on Sunday.
