Police have launched a new search operation for the body of missing fisherman Kieran Lynch who has not been seen in over a month.

Mr Lynch was on-board the "Wendy J" fishing boat crashed on the West Coast on September 14.

The Police National Dive Squad have returned to the wreckage near Smooth Water Bay in Haast where they will attempt to locate Mr Lynch, as well as conduct an examination of the vessel.

"Now weather conditions have improved, it is hoped they will be able to dive the unexplored stern portion of the wreck that was previously inaccessible," a police spokesperson said.

"It is expected this will take some time, as the wreck is resting at a depth of about 25m."

The Greymouth-based vessel ran into trouble near Smoothwater Bay on September 14 and wreckage was first spotted by a light aircraft flying in the area a few days later.

The body of Jay Cairney, 43, was discovered just days after the accident.
