Hold off on your Labour Day beach plans - heavy rain and thunder is forecast to hit much of the North Island on Monday.

A severe weather warning has been issued with Auckland, Northland, the Coromandel and Waikato all due for heavy rain.

The heaviest rainfall is set to develop in the eastern Bay of Plenty throughout the afternoon and evening, with a heavy rain watch and possible thunderstorms expected from midday.

A MetService spokesperson told Newshub drivers returning home from the long weekend should be more aware during the heavy rain.

“Pay attention when driving and read the road conditions to make sure it’s safe.”

The road toll already stands at four this Labour Weekend - up from three last year.

At this stage MetService is advising Kiwis to keep an eye on the latest Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

The bout of heavy rain is set to pass on Monday afternoon, except on the east coast where it is likely to hang around.

The west coast is headed for a rainy, overcast day.

Both Wellington and the Wairarapa are headed for long fine spells.

Despite the stormy weather, the country should remain fairly warm, with Auckland, Northland and Gisborne all reaching the high teens or even 20C.
