A suspicious package that saw roads cordoned off and a mail centre near Auckland Airport evacuated contained no threat to the public.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) removed the package from the NZ Post Mail Centre on Laurence Stevens Dr after an alarm was set off.

Those working at the centre were then allowed to return to the building, with police satisfied the package does not contain a threat.

Cordons on the buildings and the roads surrounding the mail centre are no longer in place.

Senior Sergeant Rachel Dolheguy says an alarm was activated at the mail centre at about 7:30am on Tuesday morning.

It was set off after staff deemed an item suspicious, and the building was evacuated as a precaution.

A throng of emergency services - including fire, ambulance, police and the NZDF - gathered outside the building in the wake of the alarm to assess the situation.

For a time, part of Tom Pearce Dr was cordoned off in both directions. The cordon was expected to disrupt traffic heading to the airport's domestic terminal.

Police say as far as they're aware, there was no disruption to flights.
