It's been a wet and windy start to spring - but there's a brighter weather forecast for the week ahead.
NIWA forecaster Chris Brandolino told the AM Show on Thursday that September was abnormally hot.
"September was a wet month. It was a warm month. It was the eighth warmest September since 1909," he says.
MetService says in some parts of Canterbury it's the fifth wettest year since records began back in 1943.
It's starting to take a toll on farm production, with the relentless rain tough work for farmers trying to keep their stock in good condition.
But Mr Brandolino says we can expect better weather after the 20th of October.
"We're going to become a bit more settled," he says.
"We're going to go into an extended period of dryness and warmth … early next week we'll see a big change. South Island first, warmth, dry weather - that comes to the North Island.
"So basically several days, maybe more than a week or two of extended dryness and warmth which is good news."
Overall, the weather is expected to be pretty warm going into summer. NIWA forecasts temperatures to be above average, and rainfall for much of the country will be near normal.
