A competition championing great facial hair is coming to New Zealand - and it's expected to bring a tourism boost along with it.

New Zealand has been granted the rights to the 2021 World Beard and Moustache Championships.

Organiser Ygnacio Cervio says he's always wanted New Zealand to host the event.

"I was doing a presentation in front of the Beard World Committee, and then everyone voted and they decided New Zealand is the best place."

Mr Cervio was placed sixth in this year's champs in Austin Texas, but won't be competing in the 2021 competition.

He's excited to bring the competition to this country.

"The main point was to convince everyone from Europe and the States this is a great place to host a competition, and also to travel around.

"They come here for the weekend, we have the competition, we can stay and travel around the country."

The local Beard and Moustache National Champs is being held at The Kings Arms in Auckland's Eden Terrace, at the end of this month.
