Abandoned hospital fire deemed suspicious

An old abandoned hospital building has gone up in smoke in Dunedin overnight.

Fire crews rushed to three-storey building at the Glamis Hospital site at 4am on Sunday.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.

Local man James Woods said he was woken up by the blaze at 4:30am.

"We've had a lot of curious young people randomly trying to go through the place to check it out for a while, despite police presence."

Diversions at the intersections of High St and Queens Dr, Serpentine Ave and Queens Dr, Montpellier St and Alva St, and Serpentine Ave and William St are likely to remain in place most of the day, police say.
