Bunnies find sanctuary on Christchurch roundabout

Wild rabbits have made themselves at home on a roundabout in Christchurch.

The fluffy bunnies have been an attraction for passers-by who have been seen crossing the State Highway on Anzac Dr to get a better look, posing a potential hazard for road users.

NZTA says its aware of the animals and is investigating if it is hazardous to leave them there.

"We encourage people to take their safety responsibilities and that of the other drivers on Anzac Dr, seriously: concentrate on the road and safe driving," a spokesperson says.

"The Transport Agency is currently investigating what is the next best step i.e. firstly if a safety issue exists and how feasible a control operation would be given the large numbers of wildlife."

The urge for caution has been echoed by Transport for Christchurch which released video of the public crossing onto the roundabout.

"While it might seem like a good idea to take your children to see the roundabout rabbits the safest way to do this is to point them out as you drive past," it said on a Facebook post.

"It is NOT a good idea to take them across the road onto the roundabout. We all know how unpredictable young children can be when over excited, this could also endanger the rabbits and scare them into running onto the road."
