A man was seriously burned after falling into a bonfire in Pukekohe as fire crews responded to a steady stream of Guy Fawkes-related call-outs overnight.
The man was taken to hospital after falling into the fire about 8:30pm on Saturday night, a Fire and Emergency spokesman said.
He was in stable condition at Middlemore Hospital's burns unit on Sunday.
Meanwhile, fire crews in the upper North Island responded to about a dozen fireworks-related call-outs but none serious, the spokesman said.
In the lower North Island, the fire service had six call-outs specifically about fireworks but numerous more to fires at beaches and backyards.
And in the South Island, crews attended 27 fireworks call-outs - largely in Canterbury and Otago, according to the spokesman.
Among them, a 20-year-old man was taken to hospital after being hit in the face by a firework at Waikaka - north of Gore - early on Sunday morning.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said he had suffered moderate burns.
