An Auckland-based charity organisation is under pressure to survive after both of its food rescue trucks were broken into by thieves on Sunday night.

KiwiHarvest was helping to put food on the table for children and families around Auckland.

The trucks were both parked at KiwiHarvest's headquarters in Ellerslie when they had their windows smashed in, while one of the truck's ignitions was ripped out during the break-in.

The organisation is currently out of business because of the vandalism - and is seeking replacement trucks.

KiwiHarvest marketing manager Maria Madill said it's a huge setback for the organisation.

"We're a 100 percent charitable [organisation] so it's a huge cost to us trying to get the trucks back on the road."

The organisation had more food than ever that needed distributing after they received food from the Taste of Auckland event.

"We had food to be delivered to 14 charities today alone and each one serves hundreds of people."

The food is in dire need of rescue so that the donors can get the food delivered to community groups.

"There are hungry people expecting food that we can't get to."

KiwiHarvest has a large support network that has been contacted to try and help out - but as of yet no one has come forward to help with the much-needed deliveries.
