Home detention for business owner after worker's death in explosion

A south Auckland business owner will spend the next four months on home detention, following the death of a contractor more than two years ago.

Jamey Bowring died in a diesel explosion at Salter's Cartage, a hazardous recycling disposal company, in 2015 when undertaking welding at the site.

Two years have passed since he died in a "horrific" explosion and today he was remembered by his adoring mother outside court.

"He was cheeky, beautiful, lit up a room… he was my world," said Sarah Fergusson.

In September 2015 Mr Bowring was working as a contractor at Salter's Cartage.

He was welding on top of an empty diesel tank which exploded, throwing his body more than 100 metres into a nearby car yard.

"This is one of the most serious one I can think of in all my years and its previous iterations," said Keith Stewart, Worksafe chief inspector.

Today Salter's Cartage and its owner Ronald Salter were fined $283,000 and ordered to pay $128,000 in reparations to Mr Bowring's family.

Mr Salter pleaded guilty but the court accepts he was unaware the welding work was being conducted on the day of the incident.

"It has been a difficult time for everyone. We accept the court's decision and we hope everyone can move on. Thank you very much," he said.

Worksafe says prior to the incident in 2015 Ronald Salter held himself as the conscience of the industry, while at the same time failing to meet him own health and safety responsibilities.

The regulator says today's outcome is a strong warning for other businesses to comply.

"I think it's particular for people in the recycling industry to really make sure they're on top of their game in terms of health and safety," Mr Stewart said.

Despite today's result Mr Bowring's mother says it won't ease her family's pain.

"We're very thankful for all the people that worked on this case... but nothing can bring our boy home," she said.

Mr Bowring's employer Raceworks Limited was also convicted but not ordered to pay any fine.
