Police have released the name of the man who died in the annual yacht race on Lake Te Anau in Fiordland.

He was 68-year-old Howard Robert Phillips of Invercargill.

Police and ambulance responded to the incident Saturday afternoon where an occupant of a yacht had fallen into the water.

Several other vessels also joined the search, and a man was located in the water a short time later.

Attempts to revive him with CPR were unsuccessful.
