Police are investigating after a 14-year-old boy was viciously beaten up while walking home from a party in Hawke's Bay.

Witnesses saw three people standing over the victim in a Flaxmere playground at 2:15am on October 15, but the attackers quickly fled the scene.

The boy spent a week in hospital and is still recovering from what police describe as an "unprovoked, cowardly and vicious assault".

"We are determined to find the person responsible."

A warrant to arrest a 14-year-old boy has been issues, but police say he is "actively avoiding" them by hiding with friends and family.

Information is also being sought on two other boys of a similar age, also believed to be involved in the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hastings police on (06) 873 0500.

Alternatively anonymous tips can be passed on to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
