The third day of searching will begin for a missing diver off Makara, on Wellington's west coast.

The police launch Lady Elizabeth IV, Kapiti Coastguard and local surf life saving clubs will resume searching on Wednesday for the 24-year-old New Plymouth man, who failed to return from a dive on Monday afternoon.

They will be joined by a vessel from the Ministry for Primary Industries and a fixed wing plane from Kapiti Air Patrol.

Land SAR are doing a beach search.

On Tuesday afternoon, searchers found the man's spear gun, diving float and catch bag.

"We do not know the depth of the water he was in, but we understand he was an experienced diver who was in these waters two to three times a week," Inspector Neil Banks said on Tuesday.

"There has been good support from local boaties and divers and we appreciate this."
