Triple murder-accused Sungkwan Kim gets prison for theft

A man accused of murdering three of his family members in South Korea and fleeing to New Zealand has been sentenced to two months' prison on an unrelated theft charge.

Sungkwan Kim is wanted in South Korea following the death of his mother, step-father and half-brother, but pleaded guilty last month to stealing $4100 of whiteware from a flat he was renting in Auckland.

It's alleged Mr Kim arrived in New Zealand within a week of his family's murders, and Korean authorities have been seeking his extradition since.

Police said in October that Crown Law has received a request from South Korean authorities for extradition, but it has not yet been signed off on, so he will be back in court on December 8.

Immigration New Zealand said the 35-year-old arrived in Auckland on October 24 and is a New Zealand resident.

Judge Jonathan Down is presiding over the case.
