Emergency services rushed to the scene where two vehicles were stuck in the Waimakariri River north of Christchurch with the occupants escaping to the rooftops to be rescued.
St John confirmed eight people were involved while the Waimakariri-Ashley Coastguard was also in attendance on Wednesday afternoon.
One person has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
