Auckland hit by fuel shortages again

Auckland may face a petrol shortage problem again, with reports of multiple petrol stations running out across the region.

Auckland's Point Chevalier Z petrol station has apologised to customers after running out of unleaded 91 on Tuesday morning.

A sign posted on the pumps says the shortage is due to "another disruption" at the Marsden Point refinery.

"Due to another disruption at the refinery. 91 is not available now but you can fill up 95 for the same price of 91," it reads.

"Thank you for your understanding."

Z Manly had run out of both 91 and 95 on Monday afternoon, but is since back in 91.

The shortage has been blamed on the closure of Refining New Zealand's aviation fuel pipeline on Sunday while checking for a potential leak. It's the second disruption since the pipeline was ruptured near Ruakaka in September.

Refinery staff carried out checks to determine if a leak has occurred using leak detection software. Emergency services and diggers were sent to the site.

Refining NZ spokesperson Greg McNeill said the company's leak detection software found nothing physically wrong with the pipe, and it has now been turned back on.
