Houses were briefly evacuated on a beach front road in Mt Maunganui after a gas leak on Sunday morning.
A fire communications spokesman says a car crashed into a fence on Ocean Beach Rd.
Firefighters had to remove one person from the vehicle. They are unsure of injuries at this point.
Fire crews from Tauranga, Mt Maunganui and operational support teams are at the scene.
The area was cordoned off and nearby homes evacuated. Residents were let back in shortly afterwards.
