Holiday road toll at four

The holiday road toll is up to four following crashes in Hanmer Springs and Hawke's Bay overnight.

One person died in a single-vehicle crash at 12:40am on Jollies Pass Rd in Hanmer Springs, hitting a tree.

The driver died at the scene, while the passenger was helicoptered to hospital. The serious crash unit is investigating.

And in Hawke's Bay, a car rolled down a bank on Pourerere Rd just after 5:30am. The passenger died at the scene, while the driver recieved minor injuries.

The other two road deaths so far this holiday period are an Auckland taxi driver killed after being hit by a suspected drink driver, and a person whose vehicle flipped in Northland.

The road toll for the year is at 372.
