Homeowners struggling with Earthquake Commission claims get welcome news

More than 3500 homeowners are still struggling with unsettled Earthquake Commission (EQC) claims.

But on Friday, there was a glimmer of hope in the form of an email to homeowners stuck in limbo with EQC repairs.

With a new Government comes new promises. Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration Megan Woods has been tasked with settling thousands of unsettled repairs - and she's thrown her support behind homeowners.

For the first time, an 0800 number will be set up over Christmas to help - and there are more promises of support next year.

"We realise this has been a tough seven years, and we need to check in that they're well and if they need any additional support," Ms Woods says.

In 2018, the Minister hopes to introduce a wraparound service, which includes individual case managers to deal with each claim, as well as mental health support, to help speed up the settling of claims.

"It feels like the first time we're having someone up high listening and understanding and having our backs, and it's a good feeling," says homeowner Georgie Hanafin.
