Leave early, avoid the Christmas/New Year holiday rush, suggests Automobile Association

Impatient motorists are advised to leave home earlier, instead of relying on passing lanes.

Seven people have died on our roads so far this holiday period - the latest were two people in a high-speed crash in south Canterbury on Tuesday - bringing the road toll for the year to 384.

Dylan Thomsen from the Automobile Association says overtaking other vehicles won't save you a lot of time.

"Make sure you're alert, awake, focused and not distracted - that's probably one of the biggest things for your ordinary driver," he says.

"It's not seeing somebody else or being momentarily distracted that leads to crashes."

Mr Thomsen says leaving home earlier means you can go with the flow of traffic.
