A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck over the head with a wine glass outside a south Auckland bar.

The 52-year-old was attacked during an argument with strangers on Queen St in Otahuhu about 11:30pm on Saturday, police say.

"During the attack he was struck over the head with a wine glass," Acting Detective Sergeant Warwick Worth said in a statement.

The man was in Middlemore Hospital in a critical but stable condition after emergency surgery.

Police say they are following strong lines of inquiry but want to hear from witnesses or anyone involved.
