More farmers than ever asking for help with mental health

As the country experiences an early dry summer, many farmers are facing hard choices about how to keep their stock fed.

Rural Support Trust chairman Neil Bateup said many farmers are having to send stock to slaughter early, as they can't keep feeding them, due to the lack of rain.

It's a tough time for a traditionally stoic industry and Mr Bateup said his help-line is busier than ever.

In the face of the drought, the trust is experiencing increased demand, as the help-line becomes more known across farming communities.

"It's interesting, over the last probably year, that I think the trusts are becoming more well-known, and farmers are actually putting their hand up a lot more and more," Mr Bateup said.

"We're getting a lot more calls to our help-line and that's actually tremendous."
