Traffic was blocked on Auckland's southern motorway on Friday afternoon, after a multi-vehicle crash.

A vehicle and a motorcycle collided on State Highway 1, headed north near Takanini about 2:30pm.

One person involved was transported to Middlemore hospital with serious injuries.

Diversions were put in place and the Serious Crash Unit was sent to investigate.

Lanes on both sides of the motorway were obstructed, with a temporary lane opened, heading north through road works, to allow throughfare.

By 5pm, all lanes had been cleared, but heavy congestion remained, due to a backlog of traffic in the area.
