Napier resident threatens to burn down Mayor's house over water crisis

  • 07/12/2017

A disgruntled resident in Napier suggested that the Mayor's house should be set on fire over the water crisis.

Mayor Bill Dalton told NZME his wife was "very upset" about the post on Facebook group Napier News.

Shirley Dalton said "someone suggested setting fire to our house and watch it burn chanting 'sorry no water'," according to a Facebook post by her seen by NZME.

The post on the community group has now been removed.

It is one of many angry posts on social media from residents who say they were not given enough notice about the water shortage in Napier.

Napier faced the prospect of running out of water on Monday night after reservoir levels became critically low.

In a statement Napier Council blamed "extremely heavy water use over the hot weekend," and introduced water restrictions that meant no outdoor or garden water use.

The restrictions are expected to be reviewed towards the end of the week.
