Armed police rushed to scenes of violence at Papamoa Beach in Tauranga late on Sunday night.

More than 20 calls were made to police reporting gunshots around Lyn Grove just before 9pm. Police arrived to find a large group fighting with sticks, garden tools and bats.

Several fled through neighbouring properties and left in vehicles.

One woman was hit by a car was taken to hospital. Police believe she suffered a broken leg and a shoulder injury, and is in a stable condition.

Snr Sgt Glen Saunders says the investigation is ongoing, and it's not clear yet if any guns were actually fired.

"Several people were in the street at the time, and as part of the investigation hopefully we'll be able to determine the validity of those allegations and who we may be looking for."

At least one vehicle was impounded by police. Cordons were lifted around 9:40pm.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the woman get hit or any of the fighting - call Tauranga police on (07) 577 4300 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
