Potential leak in aviation fuel pipeline

Northland oil refinery Refining New Zealand closed its aviation fuel pipeline while checking for a potential leak on Sunday.

In a statement, Refining NZ said that an alarm went off at approximately 4:30am on Sunday morning. The pipeline was shut down at about 5:15am as a precaution.

Refinery staff carried out checks to determine if a leak has occurred using leak detection software. Emergency services and diggers were sent to the site.

In September the pipeline was ruptured near Ruakaka, causing massive disruptions to flights out of Auckland airport.

Refining NZ said Sunday's situation was "different to that in September", although the potential leak appeared to be at the same site.

However Refining NZ spokesperson Greg McNeill said their engineers found no hydrocarbons at the site.

He said the company's leak detection software found nothing physically wrong with the pipe, and it has now been turned back on.
