Stolen Mercedes ditched in south Auckland after erupting in flames

A car was left engulfed in flames in the south Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe on Saturday evening after it had been stolen earlier in the day.

The Mercedes sedan had been burgled from Penrose on Saturday morning, police told Newshub, before being ditched on Great South Rd just after 5pm.

Footage of the car shows smoke billowing from the vehicle's bonnet as people from a nearby car yard run in with extinguishers.

Matt Hawken, a witness at the scene, said he saw two guys wearing bandanas around their necks driving the vehicle next to the car yard and jumping out as flames engulfed it.

They were then picked up by two women and sped off in another car, he said.

Police told Newshub no one was with the car when it was found on Great South Rd, but confirmed it had been stolen from Penrose.

Mr Hawken said police told him the robbers had stolen the car at knifepoint in the morning.

Enquiries into the incident are on-going.
