A 17-year-old male has appeared in court charged with murder after a man's body was found in Hawke's Bay.

The teen, wearing a black t-shirt, appeared in Hastings District Court on Tuesday morning where he was granted name suppression by Judge Tony Adeane.

The man's body was found on the side of Matahorua Road, Tutira, around 9:30am on Monday. Police carried out a scene examination and are speaking to a number of people who are assisting the inquiry.

"Formal identification of the victim is still being carried out, however we are confident we know who the victim is and are liaising with his family," says Eastern District Field Crime Manager Detective Inspector Mike Foster.

"We would still like to speak with anyone who was in the Matahorua Road/Shine Falls area over the weekend or yesterday morning.

"People who may have information are urged to contact Hawke's Bay Police 06 873 0531 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The teen entered no plea and will reappear at the Napier High Court on January 29.
