Three firefighters have been injured in a major blaze at a farm feed processing plant near Ashburton.

Flames tore through about half of the Seales Winslow building on Monday night.

It took up to eight hours to bring the blaze under control.

Fire and Emergency area commander Steve Greenyer says two more crews will be called in later this morning.

"The fire is completely contained but there [are] several small areas that are burning, and it's unsafe for us to go inside."

Mr Greenyer says half of the building is severely damaged.

"We're getting a large digger back in and we'll probably start dismantling the remaining part of the buliding that still stands so we can get at those remaining fire.

The cause of the blaze is not known.
