A Hamilton schoolgirl has appeared in court after her end-of-year prank left a bystander severely injured.

Shannon Jorjia Read, 17, from Waikato Diocesan School for Girls appeared in Hamilton District Court on Friday, and pleaded guilty to one charge of careless driving causing injury.

Kyle Kirsten was injured in the prank on November 1, when Read and six other students rode across Hamilton Boys' High School grounds topless on motorcycles.

Read hit Mr Kirsten on the leg as she drove past, and he had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance. He needed 12 stiches for his injuries.

"My son is fine. He has an injury but that will heal," his father Glen Kirsten told NZME in November.

"My wife and I are more worried about what's going to happen to the girls, you know, the repercussions."

At the time, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls Principal told Stuff the prank was unacceptable.
