Kiwi favourite Vogel's is celebrating its 50th birthday by offering Kiwis the chance to buy a loaf at the same price as they were first sold in 1967.

The company baked its first loaf in a small bakery on Farmhouse Lane in Auckland in the '60s, and sold it for just 14 pence - or 28c in today's money.

In a statement, Vogel's said it worked out the pricing by "asking our baker Alex's nana" and using an inflation calculator.

"There have been lots of changes in New Zealand over the last 50 years, but one thing has remained the same  Vogel's bread," says Vogel's marketing manager Andrew Fenwick. "We want to celebrate Kiwis' ongoing love of our loaf by offering Vogel's at the 1967 price."

There's a catch: Customers have to buy one loaf at the 2017 price (RRP$4.99) to get a second loaf at the 1967 price. There's also bad news for coeliacs; the deal excludes the gluten-free range.

Earlier this year, the bread was revealed to be a childhood favourite of Kiwi songstress Lorde.

Her mother Sonja Yelich a school report Lorde wrote about the bread when she was just six years old.

"My favorite bread is Vogel's fruit bread because it tastes spicy," Lorde - then known as Ella - wrote.

"The sultanas are black. It is my absolute favourite because I love fruit. It looks good. And that is my report of Vogels fruit bread. Ella."

Vogel's special 1967 pricing is available for one week only from December 4 at supermarkets nationwide.
