Firefighters are frantically trying to rescue a person who has fallen 60 metres down a cliff near Hunterville.
Emergency services were called to the incident near Vinegar Hill Domain at around 2am on Friday.
Fire communications shift manager Carlos Dempsey says a rescue helicopter is also there, assessing whether to winch the person out.
"It's slowly been escalating and we now have teams responding right from Whanganui, and also some teams going from Porirua, [including] a specialist lines rescue team.
"This person is with unknown injuries but is talking with rescuers at the moment."
Mr Dempsey says they have no idea how the person got down there.
