A Manawatū man woke on Saturday to find a stranger sleeping in his baby's room.

The man had gone to check on his son at around 6am when he found a man he didn't know asleep in a chair beside the cot.

He was wearing just a t-shirt and underwear and was described as Māori or Pasifika, with short hair, clean shaven, about 180cm tall, with a tattoo on his neck.

The baby's mother shared the story in a community Facebook group after her husband kicked the intruder out.

"He appeared drunk and confused," she said.

A police spokesperson said the man left when asked and it was likely he had entered the wrong house in a drunken mistake.
