Cattle and sheep are being shot and killed during the night on farms in Otago, police say.

On Wednesday evening a cow was shot dead on a property on Akatore Road in Akatore, five sheep were killed and another was shot and wounded on a property on Takitakitoa Road in Kuri Bush.

A bull was killed on a property on Rongahere Road in Beaumont.

On Thursday evening, three more sheep were shot and killed at the same property on Takitakitoa Road and two cows were shot at a property across the road.

Senior sergeant Jared Kirk said police believe the incidents are linked and are making enquiries to track down who is responsible.

"This is distressing for the people involved and members of the public in these communities so we want to assure people these animal deaths are being investigated thoroughly," he said.

Police want to hear from anyone else in Otago who has been affected, and anyone with further information about the shootings.

Call Dunedin Police on 03 471 4800 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
