A 54-year-old man has drowned and another person is in critical condition in Whangarei Hospital, following an incident in Northland.
St John was alerted to six people in trouble at Cable Bay just after 4pm on Tuesday.
There are reports that a person got into difficulty at the northern end of the beach and had to be helped out of the water.
A helicopter and four vehicles were sent to the scene.
The rest of the group have minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
