The country will return to our normal sunshine hours for the weekend, after a downpour drenched New Zealand this week.

MetService says the worst of the wet is over after heavy rain and thunderstorms on Thursday. We're now heading into warm and muggy weather.

Saturday is expected to be mainly fine in the east of both islands and Nelson, and cloudy with isolated showers elsewhere".

Sunday will be similar.

Temperatures across across the country will spike into the high 20s, with some areas reaching over 30degC.

The rain is predicted to return on Monday.
