The waters of a popular Tauranga beach were evacuated after two sharks were sighted on Sunday afternoon.

Lifeguards ordered swimmers out of the water at Papamoa Beach at around 2:30pm.

They used loudspeakers to warn the entire beach and several lifeguards took to their inflatable rafts to search for the marine predators.

The two sharks are believed to have been bronze whalers, according to NZME.

The fine weather meant the beach was crowded, but people were allowed to resume swimming soon after the evacuation.
