Three people taken to hospital after fire breaks out in West Melton, Canterbury

Three people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital, after a fire in West Melton, Canterbury.

One person suffered serious smoke inhalation and the other two had minor smoke inhalation, when the fire broke out shortly after 3pm on Weedons Ross Rd.

 A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two helicopters, six firetrucks and six tankers were battling the blaze.

Residents were asked to evacuate as a precaution.

The fire was under control, but residents would not be able to return to their homes, until it was completely extinguished.
