Wellington and Nelson flights cancelled as Cyclone Gita blasts country

Flights in and out of Wellington and Nelson have been cancelled as the remnants of Cyclone Gita pass through.

The storm bore down on the country overnight, bringing howling winds and torrential rain to some areas.

So far eight flights have been cancelled to and from the capital on Wednesday morning, and at least ten more are delayed.

In Nelson, two Auckland-bound flights on Wednesday have been cancelled. Further cancellations on Tuesday evening have caused a backlog of travellers, with 50 passengers holed up in the local information centre overnight.

Flying isn't the only method of travel affected - several roads are facing closures due to slips and flooding, and many tourists are stranded in the West Coast.

The New Zealand Transport Agency advises motorists to check online before heading out today.
