Police are investigating after someone left dog food laced with pills on a front lawn in Orewa, north of Auckland.

No dogs are believed to have eaten the spiked meat, with local vets not reporting any cases of poisoned pets. It's believed to be an isolated incident.

"We recognise that this is distressing to the community but want to reassure the public that these types of incidents are very rare," said Snr Sgt Jason Homan.

They don't know what the pills are.

Police say if anyone knows anything about it or sees anything suspicious, to call them on (09) 426 4555 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
