Police shot a 29-year-old man near Pohuehue, north of Auckland, on Saturday morning.
They say he was approching them with a weapon.
First aid was provided, but he died at the scene.
State Highway 1 was closed between Woodcocks Rd and Silverdale but was reopened at 3:55pm.
