Official New Zealand murder map revealed

  • 17/03/2018

This is the official murder map of New Zealand.

The grisly list contains the worst of the worst, including axe murders and victims burned alive.

The map is based on data collected by police between 2013 and 2015, and organised by police boundaries.

Canterbury Metro has the most murders on the map, with 13 over three years.

In second-equal place were Counties/Manukau South, Hamilton City, Manawatu, and Otago Coastal - all on eight murders.

In sixth were the Far North and Waitakere, with seven murders each.

"Every police district, including Canterbury, experiences fluctuations of serious crime over time, including murder," Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price told Newshub.

"The reasons these serious crimes occur can be broad, complex and varied, and are not isolated or specific to any one particular location. We know family harm is a factor in a disproportionate number of murder cases in New Zealand."

Waitakere saw a massive spike in 2014 - jumping from one murder in 2013 to six in 2014. This then decreased to zero in 2015.

The police areas with the fewest are Wairarapa, Marlborough and the West Coast- with just one murder each.

Overall, the police district with the lowest number is Tasman, with just five murders over this period.

"Police are very strongly focused on both preventing and resolving serious crimes and reducing victimisation," Supt Price said.

"Any loss of life as a result of a criminal act is a tragedy and police dedicates significant resource to thorough investigations to establish the facts and perpetrators before the courts. The resolution rates for murder is extremely high."

On the global stage New Zealand is still a very safe place to live. According to the Global Peace Index 2017, New Zealand is ranked the second-safest country in the world. Iceland is number one.
