Pets will soon be riding buses, trains and ferries in Wellington after the Regional Council voted for a new law to allow them on board.

The was only one vote opposed to the resolution, passed on Wednesday morning, and the new regulation is expected to come into force in July.

Any domestic pet can hop onboard at no extra charge, but pets will be required to be kept under control at all times.

Pets will be required to be held in a suitable carrier and will only be permitted on public transport during off-peak times.

Disability dogs will be permitted to travel without a cage as long as they are seated on the floor.

Drivers have the right to refuse entry to pets if they are deemed to be unsafe or a nuisance.
